Although my dad passed over a year ago at this point, we finished up what jobs were left and packed our bags. 10 images for Instagram doesn’t nearly capture 15 plus years of history, Halloween, Christmas parties, and stories by the fire made at this little barn turned house. To say history feels egotistical, but I don’t know how else to put it. So many bikes and builds have passed through this garage door and closing it for the last time feels strange.
I can’t thank my dad enough for putting up with my antics running a shop, supporting it, wanting to tell stories and share photos from back in the day to anyone who passed through, and giving me the skills to run things out at his place as long as I could.
“The shop” has moved home to my place and I’m still finding my footing. Moving just sucks in general. I don’t know when the door will be open again exactly, but RetroFit will not die on the vine. It just has to get through the winter.
Many thanks to @makeshift.matt @nick_fortuna @bengottheinsta59fl for the final push moving things and riding motorcycles to the new spot. I also can’t thank @marctremain and @lakemohawklocals enough for an easy and smooth sale.
Hope y’all have a great holiday and we’ll see ya in the new year.
For those that don’t know, Leigh’s dad and my dad both bought brand new black XLCHs in 1969. Absolute identical bikes. Leigh’s dad bought his from Dean’s in PA and my dad bought his from Tramontin’s in Clifton NJ.
Only difference is 54 years later Leigh’s hasn’t changed a bit, my dads original ‘69 is lost to the sands of time. However, the photo op couldn’t be passed up getting the clone and Leigh’s together.
I unfortunately don’t have a photo of when my dad bought his new, but the 3rd to last photo is the best I got. (Photo before that is Leigh’s dad) I don’t think it was even a week before my dad ripped off the decals and had the bike pinstriped. 2 years later it turned into the flame bike.
2nd to last photo is my dad’s original owner’s manual pictured with Leigh’s bike. Way too cool.
Seeing these two together is making me fidgety for another ‘69 to build the next version…
Lastly, thanks for the shirt Leigh!! #dadbikesrule #69XLCH
This project was started about 12-14 years ago. I hate to see it go but I just don't have the time or see myself fully finishing this in the future. Custom rigid frame, Mustang tank flipped upside down, split and narrowed with Triumph oil tank caps. The coils are actually hidden between the two tanks.
Stainless horseshoe battery box, stainless sissybar and seat pan made to fit but needs to be covered.
Custom hand made forward controls with spoon pegs you'll never find for a GS550. These forward controls have the ability to be foot shift/hand clutch or foot clutch/hand shift. Pictured is the hand shift setup using the original shifter flipped up, and a second brake pedal modified to act as a foot clutch.
Frame is smoothed and welded, stamped seams are gone.
The wheels are RARE GR650 Tempter aluminum 16 Rear/19 Front with brand new tires. Rear fender was radiused to match the wheel and trimmed and blended for chain clearance. Top triple tree is smoothed, filled and polished for a slick look. Bottom tree is ready for a Bates bottom mount light.
This bike comes with a TON of extra collected parts like clutch/basket, carbs, extra forks, nice shorty mufflers, etc. It pains me to see my early college project I cut my teeth on at Pratt in Brooklyn, but I'm hoping it can go to a good home that'll finish it. My dad's estate has more sentimental projects I want to hang onto, so I'm selling this bike. Hell, I think this is the second stainless sissybar my dad and I ever made. Cat eye taillight for the sissy bar is included. It did run, and ran well, it's just been sitting. Needs wiring and bungs welded in the tank for petcocks. Can provide more pictures upon request. Clean NJ title in my name. Asking $800.

It felt really good being back since 2018! It was a bit of a white knuckle drive towing a heavy trailer from NJ to Ohio for the first time. I definitely pushed the limits of my '93 F150 climbing the long hills of PA. @nick_fortuna and @corinnenj were great travel companions watching my back the whole way out! Thankfully we made it in one piece and the truck didn't blow up so that was nice.
Hale Farm and Village is a fantastic spot to host a motorcycle show. So much history combined into a few acres. I didn't take nearly enough pictures but did score some parts for maybe the clone Sportster version 2.0. Saturday had some rain in the morning but that didnt stop the show! Sunday the weather was perfect and Kate and I even snuck in a last minute interview for @thecrazygentleman podcast! Thanks for the opportunity Rob! Big special thanks to @mikeyrevolt and @starlasaz and the whole @lowbrowcustoms team for putting on another unforgettable and incredible event. Got some better pictures and video today.
239 Y Block V8 single glass pack exhaust 3 speed on the column drums all around 12volt. 3rd or 4th owner. I've owned it for over 8 years. Originally a Missouri farm truck in Glacier Blue". I purchased it from a guy in Pittsburgh PA who bought it from the family in Missouri.
Backyard red paint job was done sometime in the 1980s.
I put in new floors cab mounts front and rear firewall door jam pillars front cab corners door strikers firewall cover rubber floor mat steering box drag link king pins 3" drop leaf springs up front air shocks in rear. Trans was rebuilt about 6 years ago. Many many more new parts I can't think of off the top of my head.
Comes with brand new visor not installed front sway bar new rear leaf spring bushings original 16" rims and tires hubcaps extra vent window frames side glass.
Bed is just plywood which is perfect for hauling motorcycles or other junk around. The paint as you can see is not perfect but has that perfect farm truck patina. Only rust that was NOT fixed was the rear cab corners because you can't really see it it was not part of my plan for making the truck structurally and mechanically sound. All the gauges work. The heater box and core are mounted but needs the rest of the ductwork and controls. Turn signals work. Wiper motor new and wipers work.
This is an honest solid truck cruises nicely and has good power.
Fresh alignment brakes clutch and points all recently adjusted.

This is “Hodge Podge”. I picked this bike up as literal basket case about a year ago. This thing fought me every damn step of the way but now it’s finally done (mostly). The list is long with everything that has been done to this bike, but the biggest issue was the top end. It’s a 1000 motor that had a wasted 900 top end. Took a bit to source a nice set of 1000 heads. I then installed brand new pistons and cylinders. A few more little odds and ends and a few bugs to work out but so far she’s running great. The goal was to have an early looking Sporty vibe out of later Sporty parts. Paint by me, seat by @dnseats6779
It's been an amazing time building motorcycles and hosting parties out of my Dad's place for the past 19 years. Since my Dad's passing last May I've kept the shop operating as long as I could. However, the time has arrived where I must prepare to close down and move shop. I've weighed many options over the past few months to be able to stay in the same location however, in the end it's best to move and bring the shop home. It's been a hell of chapter at my Dad's place and incredibly bittersweet to leave behind. So many bikes, so many stories. I know my Dad enjoyed having the shop at his place but I also know he'd approve of the awesome plans I have in store for the new one. It will be some time before the new shop is built out and running. I appreciate your patience and loyalty to RetroFit over the years. Life sometimes needs a hard reset and I'm looking forward to building out a more productive work space, creating better turn around times and even higher quality work. (I'm also looking forward to taking a break and getting my own seat time in and putting down some miles, it's needed.) Any questions feel free to DM me. All current outstanding jobs will be completed before the move. -Cal
Super simple 9/16 raw steel with a nice little kick back on the top. I couldn’t be happier with how it came out. Come to find out later, it fits Jake’s king and queen seat perfectly! 👍 Sometimes we get lucky around here. 😂 #retrofitcycleworks #sissybarswhileyouwait
I was thrown challenges I didn’t think I could overcome. Tested in ways I never could have imagined when it came to family. The year started our finding out my dad had brain cancer. Father/son role was suddenly flipped. I became provider and care taker for my dad while he fought his battle. May 21st he passed. Three weeks later, June 11th, I married my best friend of almost 10 years @miss_mundy. The venue was in the same Pennsylvania coal country town my father’s family came from. We grieved the loss of my father in July as a Celebration of Life near his birthday. Then Kate and I took an almost 2 week long honeymoon around Colorado in September. We found it to be an amazingly cleansing experience being in the mountains. Reflecting who we are, how we came together, and how we’ve stayed together this long. It’s hard to not to get sucked into the negative aspects of the year. It was incredibly hard and so amazing at the same time. My immediate reaction is 2022 can suck it and move on but I can’t. I’ll take 2022 as one hell of an experience and a test of strength to be prepared for 2023. Cheers, 🍻see y’all next year.
Swipe to see. This bike was brought in by @makeshift.matt. This is his late father's 1200 Sportster he inherited. Matt's dad was in the bike scene in the mid '60s much like my dad was. We also lost our dads within the past two years. In a sense Matt and I are kindred spirits probably like our dads were. Matt's dad, Greg, owned a radically chopped swingarm pan. At one point it had a wild sissybar and an extended I beam springer front end, then later changed to a glide front end. Matt wanted to build a tribute to those earlv days of his dad's pan out of his dad's last bike, the 1200 Sportster. So we fabbed up some trick mounts for the wassel tank, late model FXWG rear fender chopped, round air cleaner, covered shocks, drag pipes and shorty mufflers. Seat made by the one and only @dnseats6779 to replicate a happy medium of what Greg had back in the '60s. Right side license plate and taillight mount was a challenge but we were able to make a sturdy mount off the belt guard. Little bit of carb tuning since the video and she rips! All it needs now is the fancy lace paint his dad had. The way I see it, it's the best of both worlds. A tribute to an earlier time and also a super reliable machine. Rumor has it there may be some front end work next, but this bike is ready to roll for now before the snow flies.
I've been working with @deanchoochlandry this summer taking photos of my Dad's Sportster clone bike for something pretty big! We've shot at 2 locations that harken back to my Dad's history. One of them being at R.S. Phillips Steel in Sussex, NJ where my dad worked for over 20 years until his retirement in 2019. This steel yard was also my first full time job out of high school and where I met Ben. My old boss, and owner Scott Phillips, was more than accommodating to allow me to bring my dad's bike and shoot photos in his old shop. We were there starting at 7am and finished around noon. I haven't spent that much time at the steel yard in over 10 years. It was certainly bittersweet with a flood of memories and emotions. Many things have changed at this place and many things have stayed the same, and it strangely still feels like home to me. I learned a lot here working beside my dad and Ben. Many parts and sissybars were made at break time on the giant road plate table in the shop over the years. We even raked my sportster on that table. It only felt fitting to shoot the finished '69 clone bike on it. Never was a finished bike up there before, never had a reason to until now. It was a little nerve wracking hoisting it in the air to get on the table but it was definitely worth it. I had to hold back a few tears taking the whole scene in. Sunday was certainly one for the books. Not only were good times had with good friends, good photos taken, I felt like some closure happened as well. Big thank you to Dean and his daughter Dahlia for spending there Sunday morning taking photos and a big thank you to Scott Phillips for opening up the yard for us! Dad, I know you'd approve. I love ya and miss ya.
It means the world to me and my family. It’s truly amazing how many peoples lives my dad has touched, despite the reclusive curmudgeon he was, and Saturday was proof of that. These few photos don’t do justice of the set up we had to display his wide range of work over the years. (I had to swipe these images from my mom’s Facebook, I didn’t have a chance to take any pics) Anyway, thank you all again. If anyone has any more pics from Saturday please send them to me, I would love to archive them. I’ll see you on the other side, Dad.
